Join us at Subtext Books on October 4th to hear from three locals who are fighting book bans and recieve a free audiobook from Libro.fm!
Daniel Mauleón is a comics writer based in Minnesota. He holds a master’s in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University, where he studied under Gene Luen Yang. With a focus on graphic novels, he has written over twenty titles, including an original book based on the Nickelodeon show The Casagrandes. Daniel was born in Puebla, Mexico, and grew up in the Twin Cities. Now he lives in Minneapolis with his wife and two cats. A former English teacher, In March 2025 Daniel attended the St. Francis school board meeting to fight against book bans.
Tasslyn Magnusson is a senior advisor with the Freedom to Read program at PEN America. She researches censorship attempts in the K-12 libraries and supports PEN America’s work in creating resources to support authors whose work is targeted. Tasslyn received her BA from University of Minnesota-Morris, MA from Hamline University and a PhD in American History from Case Western Reserve University. After twenty years of work in the fundraising sector in Cleveland, California, and Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Tasslyn returned to school, receiving an MFA in Creative Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University in Saint Paul, MN. Her poems have been published in Rogue Agent Journal, Room Magazine, The Mom Egg Review, and others. She was nominated for a 2018 and 2020 Pushcart Prize in poetry. Her chapbook, “defining,” (dancing girl press) was published in January 2019.
John Parker is the host of This Queer Book Saved My Life, a GLAAD Media Award nominee for Outstanding Podcast. He also hosts The Gaily Show which is the only daily LGBTQ news program on the radio in the US, airing in 7 markets across the country. He edits and publishes The Gaily Show's digital publication at thegailyshow.org. He is Armenian-American and the founder of the Queer Armenian Library, the world's first library devoted to works by, about, and for Queer Armenians. He serves as a founding board member of the International Armenian Literary Alliance. As a writer, he was a LAMBDA Literary Fellow and his essays have been featured in queer and Armenian anthologies. He is at work on his first novel, Resisters.
