Landmark Center’s 2026 History Play brings to life the chance meeting of two criminals in a Ramsey County jail in early 1923, setting in motion what would become the longest criminal trial in Saint Paul history at the time.
Smooth Criminals uncovers the shocking story of a massive fraud that targeted a despised and misunderstood minority group in Minnesota. German immigrants were caught on both sides of the scandal, with some falling victim to the scheme and others helping perpetrate it. Thousands of people across the Midwest lost millions of dollars, while corrupt government officials took bribes, issued threats, and helped fuel the deception. The devastating scheme left hundreds of families in financial ruin.
Written by Terrance C. Newby and directed by Chad Snyder, Smooth Criminals is a gripping story of fraud, betrayal, corruption, and prejudice.
